The Spring Edit

Is it just me, or do lighter nights, spring flowers, and the smell of freshly cut grass bring you joy and a spring in your step?
It’s that time of year for me, when I get all excited about the warmth and glow of the coming months. Generally, this sparks another opportunity to deep clean and refresh my apartment.
I thought I’d share a few of the things I do to freshen up my home at this time of year.
The Spring Clean
Whether you go all in for a huge deep clean, or cherry pick rooms or single tasks, a clean home always feels good for the soul! I thought I’d a share a few tips from my own spring clean routine that might inspire you. Of course, if you are time poor you can find independent cleaning teams who can do it for you – but I’d say, always go with a recommendation for them.
Swap out your duvet for the season – as much as I love a winter duvet, I don’t want to be overheating once the weather turns. So I make sure my summer duvet gets a freshen before it gets popped on. If your washing machine isn’t big enough there is usually a local launderette who can help you out!
Steam clean the mattress – I read an eye-opening article about the importance of this, and I can’t stress how disgusting our mattresses can be and what can build up in there over time. Now you may have a steam cleaner that has a fabric attachment you can use, but if you don’t you can still achieve a great clean with the following hack: First, mist your mattress with a solution of distilled water, rubbing alcohol, and essential oils. Then, use your steam iron over a damp cloth (never directly on the mattress!) to deep-clean and sanitise before a final vacuum, revealing a remarkably fresh sleep surface.
Deep clean the corners – I absolutely love the excuse for getting out the steam cleaner. Get a decent deep clean done by going around the edges of the sinks/shower/white goods/etc. Have a cloth ready to wipe away the grime! To avoid overwhelm, I do this in bite-size chunks – usually a room a week. That said, once I start seeing the results, I do sometimes get carried away. It’s a very satisfying job.
Extendable Dusters – I swear by a telescopic one for getting into corners, over lampshades and all those spots you usually ignore. We all have dust lurking, there’s no shame in it. A seasonal clean will sort it out.
Windows show the dirt more in sunshine – Don’t forget to clean the inside of your windows – let the light stream in. I use a microfibre cloth to get a streak-free finish, after cleaning my windows with white vinegar spray. I also use a toothbrush (don’t worry it’s for cleaning only!) to clean inside the frame itself and get rid of the grime that lurks in the seals.

If you live in a hard water area and Limescale isn’t your friend, I have a couple of tips for you to keep the sparkle and shine in place:
- I don’t go daft on harsh chemicals, however when it comes to Limescale I swear by Viakal to keep on top of the stains on the tiles and in the bath.
- If you have a black granite sink use Bar Keepers friend powder to get rid of the stains and build up and then use a paper towel to wipe over the dried surface with olive oil. I know it sounds odd, but it brings the sink back to a deep black shine and helps repel water. No more white tide marks. You need to reapply fortnightly – but it works a treat!
- If you have black fittings in the bathroom, then use the above hack but instead of olive oil use a little baby oil.
Now the clean is done, I like to tweak and freshen my surroundings, it’s like the icing on the cake of a job well done.
Fresh flowers – whether it’s Daffodils in March, Tulips in April or Roses in May, I love to have colourful fresh flowers in my home. These aren’t expensive and can be picked up for a few pounds per bunch but add a touch of joy to any home.
Review your outlook – if you have a garden, and there isn’t any life as yet, why not pop in some flowering bedding plants to a border or tub. Looking out to colour in the garden can really brighten your day. No garden, but a balcony? Not a problem a small pot with something like begonias could quickly freshen the space.
I also like to move my decorative pieces around – vases, candles, little objects. It’s a simple way to make a room feel different without buying anything new.
Scent is important – how your home smells is key. It’s time for the heavier, spiced scents to step back and bring in something lighter – fresh, clean, and a bit more uplifting.

A spring refresh doesn’t need to be a full overhaul. A few simple changes can lift how your home looks and feels day to day.
Start small, keep it manageable, and enjoy the process – it should feel good, not like a chore.
